Today is Women's Equality Day - August 26, 2005. Let's celebrate this every day!
Women's Equality Day celebrates women's right to vote. This year marks the 85 years since the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
AAUW's tradition of actively pursuing equity dates back to its earliest days. Consider this...
* In 1917, college women stood vigil outside the White House, protesting the fact that women could not vote. With this action, these women became the first group to picket the White House for a political cause.
* Years later, determined AAUW members did not let a wartime ban on conventions stop their progress. innovative holding a "paper convention" by mail.
* Today, AAUW continues its active advocacy on behalf of women and girls by lobbying Congress, educating voters, and influencing the debate on critical issues.
In June 2005, AAUW continued its tradition of progress by approving a new programmatic theme "Education as the Gateway to Women’s Economic Security." This new direction ensures focuses efforts not only on AAUW's core mission of equity and education, but also ensures that gains in education are reflected in all areas and at all points in a women's lives.
